SOUNDTRACK COMPOSITION

Project R Soundtrack

An early album composed in order to increase aptitude in writing soundtrack for various prompts. Features a variety of genres for different situations, but mainly orchestral. Several motifs occur across different pieces to connect them together.

18 Tracks, 2016

01 - Epiphany (ft. Warbs)

A rock song with brass and choir, the theme song for a hero who throws off the burden of wanting revenge on their enemy. The voice of guest singer Warbs provides a hopeful tone. The prechorus uses a motif from track 05.

02 - Menu Music

Background for a selection screen or menu, using light synthesizers and drums.

03 - Everything's Gone

Piano, oboe and violins create a sad atmosphere for a character who finds themselves entirely alone when they need help the most. The music builds to a climax near the end and descends again, and was written in collaboration with James Goddard.

04 - The Girl with the Oboe

An oboe solo accompanied by piano and violins, intended as a theme for a character who plays the oboe. The track is tranquil and its subject stands engrossed in their playing.

05 - This Unfamiliar Feeling

Accompaniment for a romantic moment, conveyed by french horn and music box backed by piano. This piece sets up multiple motifs used in tracks 13 and 14, and one in 01 and 17.

06 - Break You

An instrumental rock song using MIDI guitars and violins to give an upbeat feeling of impending victory. Uses a lead guitar sound in place of vocals.

07 - The Last Draconid

A look into the Drum and Bass genre combined with more conventional electronic instruments. Rhythm is provided by chopped-up breakbeats and uses filtering to vary the timbre.

08 - I See Red

A first attempt at a rock song with vocals, experimenting with deliberately edgy lyrics to see what kind of effect it would have. Made with MIDI guitars and accompanying violins.

09 - Distorted World

Background music for a surreal, twisted area, with timpani and filtered choir behind strange synthesizers.

10 - Lord of Distortion

Battle theme for the ancient ruler of a bizarre world, written for an orchestra and choir. The choir part was created by layering multiple vocal tracks together at once.

11 - Crystal Mountain

A track to go with a lonely, desolate location. Uses piano, violin, and bassoon to create an air of quiet tension.

12 - Overseers Assemble

Soundtrack for a small boss gauntlet in which a player is tested in the various skills they have learned. Combines rock elements with an orchestra to provide a composition with variation in tone.

13 - Heartbroken

A piece for a scene where the hero's world is shattered as they discover something terrible before their final confrontation with the villain. Led by strings and choir over organ, it creates a sense of impending dread, and uses motifs from track 05.

14 - The Anomaly

Epic orchestral music as the hero attempts to fight an impossibly powerful villain, accompanied by an organ. Near the middle of the piece, the music becomes wistful, reflecting the tragic fate of both hero and villain, before rising again for the final clash in an intense finish. Like the previous track, it uses motifs from track 05.

15 - Restoration

A simple piano solo written in collaboration with James Goddard, which plays during the reunion of the hero with their loved one.

16 - Reunion of Memory

A song with piano, strings and an instrumental oboe solo. A MIDI choir is used in place of vocals.

17 - Epiphany (Orchestral Reprise)

The main theme in track 01 is rearranged for a full orchestra and choir, again using motifs from track 05. An original interlude in the middle allows some space without the melody of the original song, and the ending rises to end with an upbeat tone.

18 - Remembering You

A song where the hero reflects on the events that have taken place, and on those companions they have lost along the way. It has no vocals, and the accompaniment is mainly piano and strings with a short french horn instrumental.
